Baldurs Gate 3 studio says not to use AI to write concept or art Verge

Following his comments on the use of generative AI, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke said the team will not use it for concept art or writing, but will still experiment with the technology.

After some controversy, developers at Larian Studios, the creator of Baldur's Gate 3, have clarified their use of generative AI.CEO Sven Wink and other Larian developers held an AMA on Reddit where they answered users' questions about the team's next title, Divinity. They also questioned reports that the studio is using generative AI in its development process.

The developer clarified his stance on the technology in a Reddit AMA.

The developer clarified his stance on the technology in a Reddit AMA.

"So, first - there will be no GenAI art in Divinity," Vincke wrote in response to a question on Reddit.Last month, in an interview with Bloomberg, Vincke said that while they weren't using Divinity's AI assets, the team was still experimenting with AI tools "to evaluate ideas, create PowerPoint presentations, design concept art, and write visual essays."

His comments were immediately criticized online by artists, developers and former Larian employees. In response, Winke released a statement explaining that he's not using the tool to create conceptual art, but rather as something artists can use to quickly look at ideas.

Now, in a Reddit AMA, he said they won't be using it for concept art at all."We decided to avoid using genAI tools when developing concept art," he wrote."This way there can be no debate about the origin of art."But Vincke left room for possible future uses of AI assets.

"If we use a GenAI model to create assets in a game, it will be trained on our data," he wrote.

In addition to the image, Lauren also demonstrated the use of Jane AI with text.

"We had a limited group experimenting with the text generation tools, but the results were 3/10 at best," Smith wrote."Even my worst first drafts... at least a 4/10... and the amount of iteration required to get even individual lines to the quality we want is enormous."

While these comments may reassure players that at least gen AI content won't be in the final product, Vincke confirmed that gen AI will still play some role in Larian.

"We hope this will help us refine ideas faster, resulting in a more focused development cycle, less waste, and ultimately a better game."
