Ayurvedic expert warns gut health can affect sleep quality;shares 7 tips to control Agni or digestion
Gut health affects sleep quality.Ayurvedic experts recommend dietary adjustments and relaxation practices to improve digestion and improve sleep.
Do you often find yourself in bed vomiting after a heavy meal at night? Most people don't realize it, but the quality of their sleep depends on their gut. They are quick to blame stress, long work hours and even extended screen time. However, according to an Ayurvedic doctor, in many cases sleep begins only after the small intestine starts sending signals. These include heaviness after meals, irregular appetite and/or bloating.
The link between sleep and gut health
Dr. Sushmita Chandran, MD (Ayurveda), consultant physician, Apollo AyurVAID, told Health Shots, "Ayurveda has long emphasized the role of Agni, the digestive fire that is the main driver of our overall well-being. When Agni is strong, the mind remains strong. However, a weak or weak movement can lead to sleep disorders."
Modern science also supports the link. Most of the gut produces serotonin, which later helps regulate sleep. When the gut is inflamed or out of balance, the body makes less of these calming messengers. This is when people may lie awake for hours, wake up frequently, or wake up feeling tired despite a full night's sleep.
According to the expert, Ayurveda interprets it as disturbing vada.
How to improve sleep quality?
If you want to get your sleep back, start improving your gut health by using the following tips, suggests Dr. Chandran:
1. Choose warm, simple meals.
2. Opt for an early, light dinner
3. Avoid eating when distracted or in a hurry
4. Use spices that support digestion such as ginger, cumin and coriander
5. Add some ghee to calm the bowels and mind.
6. Take a walk after meals to help the digestion settle
7. In the evening, Vata-soothing exercises—like a warm oil massage or reducing screen time—will help the brain prepare for restful sleep.
"When digestion is smooth, the mind continues naturally, and sleep returns to itself," the expert concluded.
